Elon Musk announced on Saturday that Donald Trump would be permitted to rejoin Twitter following a poll that the site’s new owner conducted and in which a slim majority of 15 million respondents favoured the idea.

“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk posted on the account of the former US president, whose use was prohibited after a crowd of his followers invaded the US Capitol last year.

Musk invited Twitter users to vote on whether Trump’s account should be reinstated in a poll he had started there.

Trump’s re-instatement was approved by 51.8% of Twitter users and rejected by 48.2% of people.

Following the events at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump was prohibited from using Twitter, his preferred platform for reaching the general public. The former president of the United States has since been active on his social networking app, Truth Social.
