Urging the social platform to follow the rules and telling the social media giant that the law of the land is supreme, the new IT the minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, fired a warning to Twitter on Thursday and picked up where his predecessor Ravi Shankar Prasad had left off, according to a report released by NDTV.
Over the new IT rules making those social media websites more accountable for third-party content which has more than 50 lakh users, the warning comes amid a bitter row between Twitter and the government as the above-mentioned means the immunity of Twitter over user-generated content shall be lost.
Being one of the provisions of the new legislation, to appoint a grievance officer who is an Indian citizen, the company told the Delhi High Court that it needed eight weeks for the same, earlier today. Along with appointing another officer for coordinating with the takedown requests from the country’s law enforcement agencies, the IT rule mandates the appointment of an grievance and complaints officer.
Against the failure to follow the rules, this was two days after the court warned Twitter. To appoint an Indian based grievance officer, the company is weak past the deadline that was been set by the government.
Leaving Twitter in violation of the rules and increasing pressure on the company along with earning the ire of the government, Dharmendra Chatur stepped down days later after being appointed by the social media giant as its grievance officer.
