Google once again, is all set to add two brand new features to its image search to lower the rapid spread of misinformation and baseless rumors, especially because now when the artificial intelligence tools have made it very easy to create photorealistic fakes trivial.
The newest feature of the company, Alphabet will be known as ‘About this image,’ which will work to serve extra context like when an image or similar ones were first indexed by Google, where they first appeared and where else they’ve shown up online. The intention is to assist the users to pinpoint the original source while also contextualizing an image with any debunking evidence that might have been provided by news organizations.
Google will eventually start marking every AI generated image created by its tools as such and it’s working with other platforms and services to make sure they add the same markup to the files they put out. Shutterstock and Midjourney will also be involved in Google’s newest venture and the aim is to ensure that all AI content that appears in search results is flagged as such. The originality or the actual source of the images available online is a growing issue in the AI age, and there are several startups which are jointly working and inventing ways to implement some verification and authentication tools. Truepic, which is a Microsoft backed up company, for example, offers systems that ensure an image hasn’t been manipulated from the time of it’s capture to the main delivery.
