Elon Musk has announced the creation of what he is calling xAI, a project whose aim is to “understand the true nature of the universe.” Musk has been hinting for months that he intends to create an alternative to the well-known ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot. On its website, xAI claimed that its team would be led by Musk and comprise executives who had previously held positions at a variety of cutting-edge AI businesses, including Google’s DeepMind, Microsoft Inc., Tesla Inc., and academic institutions like the University of Toronto.
A Nevada state filing with the Secretary of State indicates that in March, Musk and Jared Birchall, who manages Musk’s family office, formed a company named X.AI. OpenAI, the most well-known AI firm and creator of ChatGPT, has received a lot of public criticism from Musk. The Financial Times reported in April, citing unnamed persons with knowledge of the situation, that Musk was in talks with Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. investors about contributing to the funding of an AI business. For the new initiative, the billionaire has purchased thousands of chips from Nvidia Corp., the newspaper reported.
Despite his efforts in the field of artificial intelligence, Musk was one of a number of academics and professionals in the tech sector who called on developers earlier this year to halt the development of potent AI models.
