Spotify might get a chat feature for your shared Jam playlists and here’s everything you need to know about it

Spotify Jams are a fantastic way to create and share playlists with your friends, no matter if they’re in the next room or on the other side of the globe. However, the feature does have one significant shortcoming: the lack of an in-app chat. Currently, if you want to mock your friends’ questionable music choices (or have any other conversation), you have to switch to a different app.

While this isn’t a huge inconvenience since Spotify keeps playing in the background, it’s still a bit of a hassle. Fortunately, this might change soon. App investigator @AssembleDebug on X (via Android Police) has found evidence in the latest Spotify beta code suggesting that an in-app chat feature for Jams is on the horizon.

The bad news? This in-app chat feature seems to be in the very early stages of development. So, while it’s exciting to know it’s coming, it won’t be arriving imminently. For now, you’ll need to continue using separate apps for any playlist discussions.

Adding an in-app chat feature would make Spotify Jams even more engaging and fun. If you haven’t tried Spotify Jams yet, it allows you to host and control shared playlists with friends. We’ve prepared a guide on how to set up and share your Spotify playlists using the Jams feature.

  • Subscription Requirement: To host and control a Jam, you need to be a Spotify Premium subscriber.
  • Free Tier Limitation: Free tier users can join a Jam, but only locally on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Remote Listening: Premium subscribers can join and listen to Jams remotely from anywhere.

With these features, Spotify Jams is already a great way to connect with friends over music, and the upcoming chat feature will undoubtedly make it even better. Stay tuned for updates and enjoy your jams in the meantime!
