Instagram set to launch standalone Reels app amid TikTok’s uncertain future: Report

Instagram is reportedly exploring the launch of a separate app for its short-form video feature, Reels, as concerns over TikTok’s future in the United States persist. According to a report by The Information, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri discussed the development with staff this week, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The move is seen as Meta’s attempt to capitalize on potential regulatory challenges facing TikTok in the U.S. By offering a dedicated Reels app, Meta aims to attract users who might be looking for an alternative platform if TikTok faces restrictions or a ban.

In January 2025, Meta introduced Edits, a video-editing app designed to rival CapCut, a popular tool owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. The launch came after CapCut was removed from Apple’s App Store and Google Play due to regulatory concerns.

This isn’t Meta’s first effort to challenge TikTok’s dominance. In 2018, the company launched Lasso, a standalone video-sharing app, but it failed to gain traction and was discontinued in 2020.

The potential launch of a Reels app aligns with ongoing discussions in the U.S. government about restricting TikTok over national security concerns related to its Chinese ownership. These debates have raised concerns about data privacy, free speech, and foreign influence on social media platforms.

As of now, Meta has not commented or confirmed any reports, and it remains uncertain when or if the standalone Reels app will be officially launched. However, with TikTok’s regulatory challenges in the U.S., Meta could be preparing to position itself as the dominant player in short-form video content.
