Spotify has been hinting at a high-resolution audio tier, known as Spotify HiFi, since early 2021. Despite this long wait, the feature is still not available, unlike similar offerings from Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal.
During Spotify’s earnings call on July 23, 2024, CEO Daniel Ek addressed the topic. He highlighted the company’s shift from a single subscription model to a more diverse range of options, including basic, duo, family, and student plans. Ek acknowledged that many of Spotify’s 246 million Premium subscribers are eager for higher-quality audio but noted that lossless audio might not be a necessity for everyone. This could explain the delay in rolling out the feature.
Daniel Ek hinted at a potential new premium tier, possibly priced around $17 to $18 per month, which would offer higher quality audio and more control compared to the current Premium tier. At present, Spotify Premium costs $12 a month.
While Daniel Ek didn’t provide a specific launch date, he expressed optimism about how the new tier could positively impact the music industry and boost its growth
