Amazon India has unveiled “Project Ashray,” a new initiative designed to enhance the well-being of delivery associates throughout the logistics sector by creating dedicated rest areas in major cities across India. This pilot project, launched in collaboration with the Udyasa Foundation, will initially establish five Ashray centers in high-traffic locations in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
Key Aspects of Project Ashray:
- Amenities: Each rest point will offer comfortable seating, clean drinking water, mobile phone charging stations, and washrooms. The centers will accommodate up to 15 people at a time and operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with free access for up to 30 minutes per visit.
- Objective: Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, emphasized that Project Ashray is part of a broader commitment to improving the on-road experience for delivery associates. The goal is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for all delivery workers, not just those working with Amazon.
- Recognition: Michiko Miyamoto, India Country Director at the International Labour Organisation, praised the initiative, noting that it aligns with efforts to ensure safe and comfortable working conditions. She expressed hope that this project will inspire other stakeholders globally to support similar initiatives.
Future Plans:
- Awareness: Amazon plans to promote these rest points by adding them to Google Maps and designating parking spaces.
- Expansion: Beyond the pilot project, Amazon India is considering a public-private partnership model to develop additional rest facilities. Future facilities might address specific needs, including safe restrooms for women drivers, shaded areas, drinking water, internet connectivity, first aid support, and subsidized electric two-wheeler charging.
This initiative builds on Amazon India’s existing support programs, such as the “Sushruta” health and wellness program for truck drivers and the “Pratidhi” scholarship program for the education of delivery associates’ children.
