Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who earned a silver medal on Saturday as India’s first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be awarded Rs 1 crore cash by the state government as announced by the Chief Minister of Manipur N Biren Singh.

Mirabai began the nation’s medals record on Saturday in the category of women’s 49kg at the Tokyo International Forum and won a silver medal lifting a total sum of 202 kg (87kg in snatch and 155kg in clean and jerk) with her four triumphant tries in the event. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur talked to her and congratulated her for the achievement.

“In presence of all the Chief Ministers of the northeast today at a meeting, I broke the news about your win. That Mirabai Chanu has opened the tally for India in Olympics with a silver medal,” said the Manipur CM to Mirabai as he hailed her.

“The state government will be giving you a sum of Rs 1 crore,” added N Biren Singh. He also told her that Amit Shah Ji was so pleased and he said that it was a huge moment of dignity for the national. Everyone gave a standing ovation during the conference for the moment.

A newly-crowned silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Chanu told earlier today that it is a dream that came true. She also thanked everyone in the country for this and said: “I want to dedicate this medal to my country and would like to thank all the billion prayers of all Indians.”
