Tottenham Hotspur are now one point away from securing their Premier League safety after West Ham United suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat against Newcastle United.
West Ham entered the match knowing a victory could lift them above Spurs in the table and increase pressure on Ange Postecoglou’s side ahead of a crucial run-in. However, the Hammers failed to deliver at St James’ Park and their heavy loss has given Tottenham a major advantage in the survival battle.
The result leaves West Ham in 18th place, while Spurs remain above them with a far superior goal difference. West Ham currently hold a goal difference of -22 compared to Tottenham’s much healthier -9, which could prove decisive in the final standings.
Because of that gap, Tottenham are now in a strong position heading into their next two fixtures. Spurs only need one point from those matches to put themselves within touching distance of survival and effectively secure their place in the Premier League for next season.
Their next challenge comes against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday in what could become one of the biggest matches of Tottenham’s season. Even a draw against Chelsea would likely leave Spurs 90 percent safe due to the massive goal difference advantage over West Ham.
