Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has publicly criticised José Mourinho following controversial remarks linked to the racism incident involving Vinícius Jr during Madrid’s recent clash with Benfica.

Speaking after the match, Courtois made his position clear, expressing disappointment at Mourinho’s attempt to justify the situation by referencing Vinícius Jr’s celebration. “I believe what Vinicius said, 100%. Vinicius has never accused any rival player of racism in the past,” Courtois stated. He insisted that the Brazilian winger had clearly heard offensive language and that the incident should not be dismissed or excused.

Courtois further explained that he had seen footage of Benfica supporters making inappropriate gestures in the stands, calling the scenes “pathetic.” He stressed that racism can never be justified under any circumstances, particularly not because of a player’s celebration. “You cannot justify racism over a celebration,” he said firmly.

The Belgian goalkeeper acknowledged that Mourinho, as a coach, would naturally defend his players and club. However, he underlined that using Vinícius Jr’s actions as an excuse crossed a line. “One thing disappointed me, using Vini’s celebration as an excuse,” Courtois added.
