Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) delivered a dominant performance in the Eliminator, defeating Gujarat Giants (GG-W) by 47 runs to book their place in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 final. MI-W will now face Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) on March 15, setting up a rematch of the 2023 WPL final, which MI-W won to claim their maiden title.
Sciver-Brunt and Matthews lead Mumbai’s batting onslaught
After being put into bat, MI-W posted a massive 213-run total, thanks to stellar performances from Nat Sciver-Brunt (77) and Hayley Matthews (77). The duo dismantled Gujarat’s bowling attack with aggressive strokeplay, ensuring Mumbai had a solid foundation. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur provided the finishing touch with a blistering 36 off just 12 balls, propelling MI-W past the 200-run mark.
Matthews shines with the ball, strengthens grip on Purple Cap
Gujarat’s chase never gained momentum as Shabnim Ismail struck early, setting the tone for MI-W’s bowling attack. Matthews, continuing her all-round brilliance, scalped three crucial wickets, further solidifying her position as the Purple Cap holder. Amelia Kerr also made an impact, picking up two wickets, while Mumbai’s bowlers kept Gujarat in check with regular breakthroughs. Despite a few resistance efforts, GG-W fell short by 47 runs, crashing out of the tournament.
Final showdown: Mumbai vs Delhi once again
With this victory, MI-W have set up a blockbuster final against DC-W on March 15. The two teams also clashed in the 2023 WPL final, where Mumbai emerged victorious to lift their first title. Delhi, led by Meg Lanning, will be eager to settle the score, while Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai will aim to win their second title and become the first team to win multiple WPL titles.
