Yuvraj Singh has revisited two defining parts of his career – his famous six sixes in an over and his long partnership with MS Dhoni – in a conversation with Michael Vaughan on The Overlap Cricket podcast.

Dhoni partnership built on understanding

When asked about his favourite batting partner, Yuvraj immediately named Dhoni, saying the choice was simple because they spent a long time batting together for India. Their familiarity in the middle helped them handle different match situations with clarity.

Between 2005 and 2017, the pair added 3,105 runs in ODIs, often stabilising innings or finishing chases. Their standout stand came against England in 2017, when they put on 256 runs, with Yuvraj scoring 150 and Dhoni 134. It remains one of India’s highest ODI partnerships.

Yuvraj said their success came from clear communication and trust. Both players were comfortable taking responsibility, and their ability to read situations made them a dependable middle-order pair over many years.

Six sixes came from intent, not just emotion

Speaking about the 2007 T20 World Cup moment against Stuart Broad, Yuvraj said the over was not just about emotion. He admitted the exchange with Andrew Flintoff put him in a certain mindset, but stressed he had already decided to attack every ball given the match situation. He also recalled a later conversation with Chris Broad, who told him he had “almost finished” his son’s career with that spell.

Yuvraj explained that while the verbal exchange added intensity, the plan was clear from the start. India needed quick runs, and he backed his instincts to go after the bowler. The result was six consecutive sixes, a moment that remains one of the most recognised in T20 cricket.

He said the clarity of thought helped him commit fully to each shot. Rather than reacting ball by ball, he entered the over with a fixed approach, which allowed him to execute under pressure.
