Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly is a left-handed retired batsman. Sourav Ganguly had a successful career in both international Tests and ODI. Sourav Ganguly is regarded as one of the successful captains of Indian cricket team.
In a recent interview, former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach John Buchanan revealed that he did not believe Sourav Ganguly was suited for T20 cricket either as a player or as a captain. Sourav Ganguly and John Buchanan worked together at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2008 edition of The Indian Premier League (IPL).
In an interview with Sportstar ,John Buchanan said that he even had a conversation with Sourav Ganguly regarding the matter. According to John Buchanan, a captain needs to make quick decisions on the field in a T20 game, and the former India skipper was simply not up to the mark.
” My thinking at that time was, as a captain, you needed to be able to make quick decisions and your game needed to be suited to the shorter format, and that’s why I had those conversations with Sourav. I just couldn’t believe that he was suited to the format of the game and certainly not in a formal captaincy role”. Said John Buchanan.
John Buchanan, was not happy with the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly in the 2008 edition of The Indian Premier League (IPL) and had Brendon McCullum take over for 2009 Indian Premier League (IPL). However the team ended up finishing last, and John Buchanan was subsequently discharged.
Talking about the idea of ‘Split Captaincy’ John Buchanan, said; “I think it’s too much for one person to actually understand all the sets of place that you need to put in place, all the various decisions you need to make, reasonably quickly. And really where it was going to was to have everybody as a leader. In other words, you are saying split captaincy, but you want everybody to be a leader on the field. These days all the bowlers are incharge of every delivery that they make. All batters make decision out there without necessarily the inputs of the captain and the coaches. I think that is where the strength of the team lies”.
The 67-year-old however, believes that split captaincy is still relevant in the Indian Premier League (IPL). John Buchanan tried to introduce split captaincy but did not go down well with Sourav Ganguly, who was the skipper back then.
John Buchanan’s two year as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was full of controversies.
