The Mumbai Cricket Association has approved the naming of a stand at Wankhede Stadium after former India captain and coach Ravi Shastri. The Level 1 stand, located below the press box, will carry his name in recognition of his long contribution to the game.

Ravi Shastri stand to be inaugurated at Wankhede Stadium on April 9

The stand will be inaugurated on April 9, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expected to lead the ceremony. The decision was taken during an Apex Council meeting of the MCA, where it was also agreed that several stadium gates would be named after former India cricketers Diana Edulji, Dilip Sardesai and Eknath Solkar.

The move is aimed at honouring players who have made a significant impact on Indian cricket, both on and off the field. Shastri’s name adds to that list, with his career spanning roles as a player, commentator and coach. As an all-rounder, he represented India in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs, contributing with both bat and ball across formats.

After his playing days, Shastri remained closely associated with the game, taking on broadcasting roles before moving into coaching. As head coach of the Indian team, he was part of a period that saw notable series wins and consistent performances across formats.

The naming of the stand at Wankhede, one of Indian cricket’s most important venues, is seen as a fitting recognition of his journey. The stadium has hosted many memorable moments in Indian cricket, and this addition further connects the venue with the country’s cricketing history. Further details of the inauguration ceremony are expected closer to the date.
