Ishan Kishan, the wicketkeeper-batter representing Jharkhand in domestic cricket, remained absent from the final round of Ranji Trophy matches that commenced on Friday. Alongside Kishan, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer were also missing from action. While Iyer cited lower back and groin issues, the absence of these players raised questions about their commitment to first-class cricket.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently emphasized the importance of centrally contracted players participating in domestic tournaments. BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated that fit contracted players must make themselves available for selection in domestic cricket without excuses. This directive aims to ensure that players prioritize their commitment to domestic cricket, leaving the selection decisions to the respective selectors.

In Kishan’s absence, Kumar Kushagra took over the wicketkeeping responsibilities for Jharkhand in their match against Rajasthan. Despite Jharkhand’s struggles in the tournament, Kishan’s absence has left a void in the team’s lineup.

Kishan, who sought a break during India’s South Africa tour, has been training with his new Mumbai Indians captain, Hardik Pandya, in Baroda. Meanwhile, Mumbai, led by Iyer, have already secured a spot in the quarter-finals and are competing in their last league match against Assam at home.
