India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami delivered a crucial blow to Australia by dismissing Steve Smith for 73 in the semi-final clash of the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Stadium. Shami, who had earlier left the field to get his foot taped after completing his third over, returned strongly to break Australia’s steady partnership.
Smith was looking set for a big score and was in fine touch, steering Australia’s innings towards a solid total. However, his innings came to an end when Shami bowled a low full-toss that rattled the off-stump. Smith had stepped down the track to drive the ball over extra cover but completely missed the delivery, leading to his dismissal. Frustrated with himself, the Australian batter shook his head as he walked back to the pavilion, missing out on what seemed like a potential century.
Shami’s breakthrough came at a crucial juncture, as Australia was accelerating in the last few overs, finding boundaries with ease. Smith’s dismissal provided India much-needed relief as they looked to contain Australia’s total in the high-stakes encounter.
Earlier in the match, Shami was seen in the dugout getting his foot taped after his initial spell of three overs, where he conceded 17 runs and took a wicket. His return to the attack, however, proved to be a game-changer for India.
With Smith back in the dressing room, Australia will now rely on Alex Carey and the lower order to push towards a competitive total in Dubai.
