Jofra Archer cut a visibly frustrated figure after Travis Head survived a sharp chance early in Australia’s innings. Bowling a 143kph length delivery that angled in before seaming away, Archer completely opened Head up, forcing him into an awkward fend as he hopped in the crease.

The thick outside edge flew swiftly to the left of Jamie Smith, who reacted late but still managed to get both hands to the ball — only to spill it between first and second slip.

Archer stood frozen in disbelief, hands on hips, knowing it was the perfect dismissal opportunity wasted. Head, clearly troubled by the away movement, escapes — and England may well rue this moment.
