Sutherland’s innings of 210 runs came to an end after she attempted a scoop shot against left-arm spinner Chloe Tryon early in the third session. Although she narrowly missed surpassing Ellyse Perry’s Australian record of 213, Sutherland’s achievement cements her as a rising star in the sport.
The 22-year-old was in contention to challenge the world record Test score of 242 set by Pakistan’s Kiran Baluch in 2004, settling for the fourth spot on the all-time list. Despite falling short of the record, Sutherland’s performance received thunderous applause from the WACA crowd, including her parents in the stands.
Having reached her double century on her 248th delivery, Sutherland also smashed the record for the fastest double hundred previously held by Karen Rolton off 308 balls. Additionally, she became the second-youngest batter to strike a double century, behind Mithali Raj.
Sutherland’s exceptional performance wasn’t limited to her batting prowess; she also contributed with the ball, claiming figures of 3 for 19 off nine overs to help rout South Africa for their lowest Test score of 76. Her all-round brilliance has solidified her position as a prominent figure in women’s cricket, inspiring aspiring players worldwide.
