The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka through routine surveillance. The cases involve a three-month-old female and an eight-month-old male, both treated for bronchopneumonia at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. The female infant has been discharged, while the male infant is currently recovering. Neither patient had a history of international travel.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause flu-like symptoms ranging from mild to severe. It spreads through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, or respiratory droplets. The virus is most active during the winter and early spring months.

Mild Symptoms:
- Cough
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Fever
Severe Symptoms (in some cases):
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing
- Hoarseness
- Pneumonia
- Aggravation of asthma
Who Is at Risk?
HMPV poses the highest risk to:
- Children under five years old
- Elderly individuals
- People with weakened immune systems
The Union Health Ministry reassured that no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases has been observed in the country. Surveillance and preparedness measures are in place to address any potential public health concerns.
