Joe Biden’s top medical advisor suggests ‘total lock-down’ in India to prevent spread of Coronavirus

Anthony Fauci has suggested a complete lockdown for a few weeks in India as an intermediate step in order to contain the spread of COVID-19, as its ready second wave shows no sign of stopping.

Dr. Fauci in an interview with The Indian Express said that another most important thing is to get an immediate supply of oxygen kits, medication and Personal Protective Equipment. He also added that looking at the magnitude of things, India should look at putting together a crisis group that would meet and start getting things organised.

One of the things Dr. Fauci said, without naming any government that must have been recognised was that victory was declared maybe too prematurely.

He added that one of the things that India really needed to do was to shut down the country temporarily. He also said that there was “immediate, intermediate and the long-range measures to contain the virus. Dr Fauci said that the most important thing immediately was not only to get oxygen, medical supplies and PPEs, but an immediate shut down of the country.

Dr. Fauci is the chief medical advisor of the Biden administration. He said that when China experienced the explosion of coronavirus, they immediately shut down completely.  Dr. Fauci added that to put an end to the cycle of transmission, the country could be shut down for a few months.

“Literally, lockdown so that you wind up having less spread. No one likes to lock down the country. “Well that’s a problem when you do it for six months,” he said. “But just a few weeks of lockdown would have a significant impact on the dynamics of the outbreak,” he added.

Some states have imposed a lockdown in their territories. Last month, Prime minister Narendra Modi said “Lockdown should be the last measure to deal with the pandemic”. He asked the states to convince the migrant workers to stay put at their places of work with the guarantee for their lives and livelihood.
