The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked a significant Rs 1,560.52 crore contract with the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), a unit of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL), for the procurement of 47 T-72 Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs) for the Indian Army. The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi on January 21, 2025, marking a major milestone in strengthening India’s defense infrastructure.
The T-72 Bridge Laying Tanks play a critical role in enhancing the mobility and operational capabilities of mechanized forces. These tanks are equipped with integral bridging capabilities, enabling them to launch bridges for Tank and Armoured Vehicle formations during offensive and defensive operations. This feature significantly enhances the Indian Army’s ability to operate effectively in challenging terrains and under adverse conditions.
Designed and developed indigenously, the procurement of these BLTs is a step forward in achieving the objectives of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative. By promoting indigenous manufacturing, the project is expected to boost domestic production capabilities, foster local employment, and reduce dependency on imports in the defense sector.
This contract underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing the armed forces while simultaneously supporting the Make-in-India movement. It also highlights HVF’s capability to deliver advanced defense equipment tailored to meet the evolving needs of the Indian Army. The deployment of these BLTs will be instrumental in enhancing the Army’s combat readiness and operational mobility in critical battlefield scenarios.
The Heavy Vehicles Factory, located in Avadi, Tamil Nadu, has a long-standing legacy of manufacturing high-end armored vehicles for the Indian defense forces. This latest contract adds to its robust portfolio and reinforces its role as a key player in India’s defense ecosystem.
