Volvo introduces all-wheel-drive only SUVs for 2024: Report

Volvo is gearing up for the 2024 model year with some exciting changes to its lineup. The Swedish automaker has announced that it will be offering two of its popular SUVs exclusively in all-wheel-drive configurations. In addition, other models such as the S60 sedan and the all-electric C40/XC40 Recharge will receive notable updates.

Starting with the SUVs, Volvo will bid farewell to front-wheel-drive options in the gas-fed XC40 and XC60 models. The XC40, previously available with a standard B4 powertrain that powered the front axle, will now exclusively offer the all-wheel-drive B5 variant, equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 247 horsepower. Similarly, the XC60 lineup will no longer include the front-wheel-drive version of the B5 powertrain. Instead, customers can choose between the all-wheel-drive B5 and the plug-in-hybrid T8 configurations, as the all-wheel-drive B6 option has also been discontinued.

Unfortunately, fans of the high-performance Volvo S60 Recharge Polestar Engineered will be disappointed to learn that the variant will not be available for the 2024 model year. This sporty sedan featured a powerful 455-horsepower T8 plug-in-hybrid powertrain, along with performance enhancements such as adjustable Öhlins dampers, gold-painted six-piston Brembo front brake calipers, and forged 19-inch wheels. However, Polestar editions of the V60 wagon and the XC60 will still be offered, catering to enthusiasts seeking a thrilling driving experience.

In recent news, Volvo also unveiled updates for the fully electric XC40 Recharge and its coupe-like sibling, the C40 Recharge. Both models will now offer a rear-wheel-drive configuration, featuring a newly developed 248-horsepower electric motor and a 79.0-kWh battery pack. The claimed range for the C40 is 297 miles, while the XC40 offers a range of 293 miles. The all-wheel-drive versions of these models will retain their front-mounted motor but will benefit from the addition of the new rear electric motor. As a result, they will produce a combined 402 horsepower, offer an increased range of 31 miles, and support faster charging with a peak rate of 200 kilowatts.

Pricing details for the 2024 Volvo models are expected to be announced in the coming months. Meanwhile, Volvo recently unveiled its upcoming 2025 EX30 EV SUV, which will start at an attractive base price of $36,145. The company continues to make strides in the electric vehicle market, providing customers with an enticing blend of performance, innovation, and sustainability.
