Former information & broadcasting, and higher education secretary, Amit Khare, was appointed as the Advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. His nomination as ‘Advisor to the Prime Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office’ is contractual tenure for two years.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment Shri Amit Khare, IAS (Retd.) (JH:1985) as Advisor to the Prime Minister in Prime Minister’s Office, in the rank and scale of Secretary to Government of India, on contract basis, as per other usual terms and conditions as are applicable in the case of re-employed officers of Secretary level in Government of India, initially for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” an order said.
An IAS officer from the 1985 batch of the Bihar-Jharkhand cadre, Amit Khare, seized the charge of Secretary, Ministry of Education (department of higher education) in December 2019. A short while after his appointment, the National Education Policy 2020 was passed by the cabinet on July 29 2020. He was superannuated from his position as Secretary last month.
Khare has also served as Member Secretary in the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Union Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers and Joint Secretary in the Department of Higher Education, Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. He holds an MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad, and has a Certificate in Public Administration from Syracuse University, US.
He will be joining the Prime Minister’s Office after ex-cabinet secretary PK Sinha and ex-secretary Amarjeet Sinha left the PMO as advisors this year.
