A man was apprehended on Friday after scaling the wall of the Parliament and jumping into the premises, raising fresh concerns over security at one of India’s most high-security zones. The breach comes less than two years after one of the most dramatic incidents inside the Lok Sabha chamber in 2023.

In December 2023, two men — Sagar Sharma (25) from Lucknow and Manoranjan D (35) from Mysuru — created chaos in Parliament when they leapt into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery. Once inside, they raised slogans and opened canisters that released yellow smoke, leading to panic on the House floor.

According to officials, the duo had entered the gallery using visitor passes that were facilitated by Pratap Simha, BJP MP from Mysuru. They had hidden smoke canisters in their shoes and television footage showed them jumping across desks, apparently making their way toward the Well of the House before being overpowered.

Both Sharma and Manoranjan were taken into custody by Parliament security and MPs present in the chamber, who intervened and caught one of the intruders. The incident was described as one of the biggest breaches of security in Parliament since the 2001 terror attack.

The latest breach on Friday, though less dramatic, has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Parliament’s security framework and revived memories of the 2023 episode. Authorities have begun a fresh review of security measures in and around the complex.
