President Ram Nath Kovind honours late CDS Bipin Rawat with Padma Vibhushan

The daughters of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat accepted the Padma Vibhushan awarded to him posthumously.

India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, who passed away in a helicopter crash in December last year, was posthumously conferred Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award.

The daughters of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat accepted the Padma Vibhushan awarded to him posthumously.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday granted Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri award 2022 at an event at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Other than Gen Bipin Rawat, the recipients included senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Cyrus Poonawalla, chairman of Serum Institute of India.

The Civil Investiture Ceremony–II is slated to be held on March 28. At today’s event, the President bestowed two Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and 54 Padma Shri awards.

The recipient list for this year’s Padma awards was announced by the Union Home Ministry in January this year. 17 personalities were bestowed with the Padma Bhushan. Tech giants Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, and Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet, were also conferred awards under the category ‘trade and industry.

A total of 107 personalities were conferred with Padma Shri, comprising Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and singer Sonu Nigam.
