The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edapaddi K Palaniswami, expressed distress over the “three-language formula” introduced by the New Education Policy 2020. According to the Indian Express, the minister asserted that they would continue to follow the two-language policy, irrespective of any policy changes.
“Tamil Nadu will never allow the three language policy. The three language policy in the New Education policy is painful and saddening”, quoted Palaniswami. He further urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the three-language policy.
While urging the government to reconsider the language policy, Tamil Nadu CM pushed his case by backing the late Chief Ministers Anna Durai MGR and Jayalalithha who, in the past, have expressed resent against imposition of Hindi language in the state.
Palaniswami, in his statement, also went back to the 1965 agitation by students in Tamil Nadu against the then Congress government. The agitation was staged across the state against the Congress government which was proposing to make Hindi as the official language.
However, the Education ministry has been re-assuring that no language would be imposed on a state and choosing a language remains a decision which is to be taken by the state. The Union Minister of Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal, took twitter to reiterate and reassure that no language would be imposed on any state. “I once again like to insist that the central government will not impose any language on any state”, he quoted.
