Bengal Elections 2021: Mamata Banerjee, Derek O’Brien hits back at Amit Shah’s phase-1 result predictions

Amit Shah at a press conference in New Delhi said that the high voting percentage in first phase indicates BJP has already garnered most of the votes in the 30 assembly constituencies.

All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien on Sunday, hit back at Union home minister Amit Shah’s predictions concerning the results of West Bengal’s phase-1assembly elections.

Commenting over the BJP leader’s assurance of winning more than 26 seats, O’Brien said that Amit Shah’s prediction on phase 1 result is a mind game and added pointed out at Delhi, Jharkhand & Chhattisgarh elections.

“Amit Shah’s prediction on phase 1 result is a mind game. TMC will win. He makes such predictions & falls flat on his face. Look at what happened in Delhi, Jharkhand & Chhatisgarh. This is a tonic from Delhi to boost BJP workers but it won’t work,” Derek O’Brien told news agency ANI.

O’Brien’s recent comment comes after, Amit Shah at a BJP press conference in New Delhi earlier in the day, informed reporters of the high voting percentage in the first phase indicated the party has already garnered most of the votes in the 30 assembly constituencies.

“After discussions with booth level workers & party leaders, I can say out of 30 seats in West Bengal we will win more than 26 seats. We have got clear indications that BJP will win more than 37 seats out of 47 seats in Assam,” Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah said in a press conference on Sunday.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday also questioned the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s predictions and assured that “the people’s verdict will be evident after votes are counted.”

Without making any reference to Shah, Banerjee questioned how such a claim could be made just a day after the elections were held. The counting of votes for all eight phases of the election is slated to be taken up on May 2. She also asked “Have you (HM Amit Shah) entered the EVM?,” reported news agency ANI.

During the previous assembly elections in West Bengal, BJP had won just three assembly constituencies. However, it improved the party’s vote share and the seats by winning as many as 18 Lok Sabha seats in 2019.
