PM Modi, President Kovind, among others pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 152nd birth anniversary

Prime Minister Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind began the day by visiting Raj Ghat, Delhi, a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, and paid respect to his resting place.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among many other ministers and world leaders, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti celebrated annually on October 2. Today marks Mahatma Gandhi’s 152nd birth anniversary. 

Prime Minister Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind began the day by visiting Raj Ghat, Delhi, a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, and paid respect to his resting place. Many others took to Twitter to express their admiration for the ‘Father of the Nation’ on the account of his birth anniversary. 

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, “Homage to Bapu on #GandhiJayanti. It is a special day for all Indians to remember Gandhiji’s struggles and sacrifice. Let us take a pledge that we will continue to strive for making India a country of Gandhiji’s dreams while adhering to his teachings, ideals and values,” urging Indians to follow Gandhi’s non-violent and anti-discriminatory ideals.

Prime Minister Modi paid homage to the father of the nation today by laying a wreath at Raj Ghat. He also tweeted, “Tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary. I bow to respected Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. The life and ideals of Pujya Bapu will continue to inspire every generation of the country to walk on the path of duty,” in Hindi. He further added that Gandhi’s principles are “globally relevant and give strength to millions.”

Vice President M. Vankiah Naidu, who also accompanied the Prime Minister during his visit to Raj Ghat, expressed his respect for Mahatma Gandhi by writing, “My respectful tributes to the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary today.  Universally revered as an apostle of peace & non-violence Gandhiji was an embodiment of selfless service, kindness & compassion. #GandhiJayanti.” He also commended Gandhi’s sacrifice and contribution to the National freedom movement. 

Others to come forth on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti to extend messages of hope and pay respect to Mahatma Gandhi include Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Amit Shah, tweeted in Hindi, “Mahatma Gandhi inspired the whole world to walk on the path of peace and non-violence. Gandhiji’s ideas of Swadeshi, Swabhasha and Swaraj will continue to inspire the countrymen for a long time.”

The Defence Minister wrote about Gandhi’s wisdom and his contribution in leading India to its Independence, tweeting “I bow to Pujya Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. A towering personality blessed with tremendous willpower and immense wisdom, he provided exemplary leadership to India’s freedom movement. Let us rededicate ourselves to “Swachchta and Atmanirbharbharta” on his jayanti.”
