No proposal made to amend Official Languages Act to include Scheduled languages as its official languages: MoS MHA Nityanand Rai in Rajya Sabha

Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Government of India in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on unstarred question ‘whether government has any proposal to amend Official Languages Act to include Scheduled languages other than Hindi and English as its official languages as suggested by the Supreme Court said “No Sir”.

Last month the Supreme Court had asked the Central government to consider amending the Official Languages Act of 1963, to include scheduled languages which are listed in the 8th schedule other than Hindi and English as official language, while hearing an appeal filed by the Centre against a judgment passed by the Delhi high court on June 30, directing the Centre to translate the draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification of 2020 into twenty-two scheduled languages

Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa also raised the matter of Punjabi language not being included on the list of official languages in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Exclusion of Punjabi from the list of official languages of J&K came up in Lok Sabha on Monday and Tuesday. Congress’s Manish Tewari raised the issue on Monday and NDA ally Shiromani Akali Dal’s Sukhbir Singh Badal raised it on Tuesday, and added that NC leader Farooq Abdullah would confirm it. The NC leader added that Punjabi is spoken by many in J&K, and urged the government to consider the suggestion, and also adding Pahari and Gujari as official languages of the UT

DMK MP Kanimozhi has also given Adjournment Motion notice in Lok Sabha over ‘promoting all 8th scheduled languages equally along with Hindi.
