The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) unveiled the Meerut Metro at the RRTS Depot in Duhai, Ghaziabad, on Saturday. This new transit system is expected to enhance the city’s transportation, offering faster and more efficient connectivity.
The Meerut Metro features three-car trainsets with a mix of transverse and longitudinal seating arrangements. Each train can accommodate over 700 passengers, with seating for 173. Platform screen doors (PSDs) will be installed at all stations to improve safety and crowd management. Push-button selective door opening will help conserve energy.
NCRTC Managing Director Shalabh Goel highlighted that the Meerut Metro will boost the city’s connectivity and reduce travel time, while easing traffic congestion. He noted that it will foster economic growth and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
Built under the Make in India initiative, all trainsets are being manufactured domestically in Savli, Gujarat. So far, five trainsets have been delivered to the NCRTC. These modern trains are designed to operate at speeds up to 120 km/h, featuring energy-efficient regenerative braking systems and advanced safety measures such as emergency communication systems and fire alarms.
The 23-km Meerut Metro corridor will include 13 stations, nine of which are elevated, three underground, and one at grade level. The system will cover the 23-km distance in just 30 minutes, providing quick transit for commuters.
With construction moving at a rapid pace, the project is expected to be completed on schedule, further strengthening the transportation infrastructure in the region.
