Chinese Ambassador to India, Sun Weidong on Friday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary saying “Mahatma Gandhi’s Vision will continue to inspire us”.
Weidong took to Twitter on Friday and extended his respect to India’s ‘Father of the Nation’ as he wrote “Pay my respects to #MahatmaGandhi on his birth anniversary. His vision and wisdom will continue to inspire all of us today.”
The United Nations has marked October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and his ideal of non-violence that drove India towards its Independence.
The practice of the principles postulated by Mahatma Gandhi is manifest throughout the world. Even today when serious issues like racial discrimination, ethnic riots, and terrorist depredations are pronounced, Gandhian principles are more relevant in such dire conditions.
If we trace back to history, Mahatma had no connection with China whatsoever. He never visited China. But according to the Gandhi specialist, Pascal Allen Nazreth, many Chinese thinkers visited India to meet Gandhi, before the era of Mao Zedong. They have used Gandhi’s ideals to solve problems. According to Shang Quanyu, Professor of Foreign Studies Department at South China Normal University in Guangzhou, Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence, social cohesion, environmental protection are very pertinent subjects in contemporary China.
