In a significant diplomatic development, China has weighed in on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. On May 10, 2025, Chinese Politburo member Wang Yi spoke with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval via phone to discuss recent events, including the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 Indian civilians.
During the conversation, Doval reiterated India’s stance that while it had to respond decisively to terrorism, “war is not India’s choice”, adding that both India and Pakistan were committed to maintaining the ceasefire and working toward regional peace and stability.
Responding, Wang Yi condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed China’s opposition to all forms of terrorism. He emphasized that peace in Asia is “hard-won and should be cherished,” and that India and Pakistan, both China’s neighbors, should “remain calm and exercise restraint.”
China expressed appreciation for India’s assurance that it does not seek war and stated its hope for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, to be achieved through dialogue and consultation. Wang Yi added that resolving differences peacefully is in the “fundamental interest of both countries and the shared aspiration of the international community.”
This call comes as global powers, including the United States and the United Nations, have urged both nations to de-escalate following Operation Sindoor and subsequent cross-border incidents.
