Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case: CBI faces delays in polygraph test due to lack of lawyer for accused

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is encountering delays in conducting a polygraph test on Sanjoy Ray, a 33-year-old civic volunteer accused of raping and murdering a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Although the CBI has received preliminary permission to carry out the test, the absence of legal representation for Ray has slowed down the process.

  • Polygraph Test Delays: The polygraph test, commonly known as a lie detector test, was initially scheduled for Tuesday. However, it had to be postponed because no lawyer was available to represent Ray. This test is crucial for verifying Ray’s statements, as it measures physiological responses such as heartbeat, breathing changes, sweating, and blood pressure.
  • Legal Representation Issue: Initially, no lawyer was willing to take on Ray’s case, complicating the test’s scheduling. A legal aid counsel has now been appointed to inform Ray about the physical and psychological aspects of the polygraph test. The CBI can proceed with the test once Ray provides his consent.
  • Investigation Progress: Meanwhile, the CBI continues to investigate the case, including the involvement of former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, whose responses during questioning have reportedly been inconsistent. The investigation is also focusing on the management of the hospital and the renovation of the seminar hall where the crime occurred.

The state government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during Ghosh’s tenure since 2021. The CBI is expected to submit a status report to the Supreme Court by August 22.
