Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed on Monday to dispatch top ministers as special envoys to Ukraine’s neighbouring nations to oversee the evacuation operation, signifying an expedited mission to bring trapped students and other Indians back from Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.
Jyotiraditya Scindia will be in charge of Romania and Moldova, and Kiren Rijiju will be in charge of Slovakia. VK Singh will be in charge of the evacuation in Poland, while Hardeep Singh Puri will head to Hungary.
Because Ukraine’s air space has been closed as a result of Russia’s invasion of eastern Ukraine and other parts of the country, India is using its neighbouring countries such as Romania and Hungary to evacuate Indian students out of Ukraine.
On Monday morning, Prime Minister Modi convened an emergency meeting to review the evacuation strategy. It was determined during the conference that the ministers would visit a few countries shortly to deal with any diplomatic issues that may arise in bringing Indians back through these countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with foreign minister S Jaishankar and other top officials for more than two hours on Sunday. Modi stated during the meeting that the government’s primary concern is securing the safety of Indian students and rescuing them. It was also stated that New Delhi will seek closer coordination with Ukraine’s neighbouring nations in order to speed up the evacuation process.
After video footage of certain border troops forcefully confronting and manhandling Indian students circulated on social media, the idea to deploy top ministers as special envoys were made.
