The Manipur government cut off internet connections across the state for five days, starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, in response to student protests. The decision was taken to stop the spread of hate speech, images and videos on social media, according to a notification from the state home department.
The suspension, which will last until 3 PM on September 15, covers mobile data, broadband, VPN services and other communication lines.
The notification stated, “Temporary suspension/curbing of internet and mobile data services including Lease Lines, VSATs, broadbands and VPN services (were ordered) in the territorial jurisdiction of the state of Manipur for five days with effect from 3 PM of September 10 to till 3 PM of September 15,”
The action comes after heightened unrest, with security forces using tear gas to disperse student and women demonstrators attempting to march towards the Raj Bhavan. According to officials, protesters want the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and security advisor removed.
