In a letter sent after allegations of biological activities in Ukraine, India took a firm stance, stating that it is critical to guarantee full and effective implementation of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC).

During a UNSC briefing on Ukraine, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, T.S. Tirumurti, said this in response to Russian charges of US biological programmes.

Tirumurti also shared a letter, which read, “We have noted the recent statements by States and wider information regarding biological activities relating to Ukraine. In this context, we would like to underline the importance attached by India to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) as a key global and non-discriminatory disarmament Convention, prohibiting an entire category of weapons of mass destruction.”

He went on to say that it’s critical to guarantee the BTWC’s full and effective implementation in both law and spirit. He further stated that India believes that any issues pertaining to duties under the BTWC should be handled in accordance with the Convention’s terms, as well as via dialogue and cooperation amongst the parties involved.

He continued by stating that diplomacy and conversation are the only viable options. This comes after the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier this week that US-funded Biolabs in Ukraine was working on developing a “covert transmission of deadly pathogens” method.
