United Nations resolution to drop economic embargo against Cuba passed with 184 votes

The only two nations to vote against United Nations resolution to drop economic embargo against Cuba are US and Israel.

US president Joe Biden gets slammed by Cuba. He broke an election promise to improve relations between them after the US voted against a United Nations resolution to end the blockade of the island.

At the UN General Assembly’s annual resolution, Biden administration voted against ending the economic embargo despite the president’s campaign commitment to lift current restrictions on remittances and travel.

On Wednesday, Bruno Rodriguez, Cuba’s Foreign Minister told the United Nations in New York that president Biden’s “pernicious passivity” was because of the Democrat’s electoral ambitions in Florida.

Bruno Rodriguez claimed that the electoral platform for the Democratic party promised voters during the time of election that it would rapidly reverse actions taken by the government of Donald Trump. He claimed in particular that it would eliminate restrictions on travel to Cuba, remittances and the fulfilment of bilateral migratory agreements, including restrictions to the issuance of visas.

He added criticism for the Biden Administration and raised the question of how the trust of the voters have been broken.

Although the UN resolution passed with 184 votes, it carries no binding consequence at lifting the embargo, which can only be done by the US Congress.

Richard Burgon, British Labour Party politician, also tweeted that, “Today the UN voted against the USA’s near 60-year blockade of Cuba.

184 counties opposed the blockade, including Britain.

Just 2 countries voted for it (USA and Israel) and 3 countries abstained.

The world has spoken yet again. This cruel and inhumane blockade must end.”
