On Thursday, Ukraine’s ambassador to India requested India’s Ministry of External Affairs to convene a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.
The proposal came only minutes after Russian President Vladimir Putin issued an order for a “special military operation” in Ukraine’s Donbas. The order was swiftly followed by a series of massive explosions across Ukraine. Over 18,000 Indian people live in Ukraine.
The Russian military operation’s purpose, according to the ambassador, was to “destroy” Ukrainian sovereignty. This is the second time Ukrainian ambassadors in South Asia have made such a request. Markian Chuchuk, the Ukrainian ambassador to Pakistan, made a similar appeal for interference and negotiation ahead of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s trip to Moscow on Wednesday.
The Russian military has begun assaulting Ukraine from various angles, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). A statement came from the MOFA, referring to Ukrainian efforts as a “joint response” of the world. It said, “Our partners should immediately enact a package of new sanctions. We also call on friendly capitals to continue strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities by providing weapons and military equipment.”
The capital city of Kyiv reported loud blasts targeting various infrastructures on the outskirts of the city shortly after President Putin ordered a “special military operation” against Ukraine.
