In the midst of the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine on Ukrainian soil, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. In the United Nations Security Council, he sought Modi’s backing (UNSC).
“Spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Informed of the course of repulsing Russian aggression. More than 100,000 invaders are on our land. They insidiously fire on residential buildings. Urged India to give us political support in the UN Security Council. Stop the aggressor together!”, Zelensky tweeted.

The news comes only one day after Prime Minister Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and requested an immediate end of bloodshed in neighbouring Ukraine.
During the phone call, Putin updated PM Modi on the latest events in Ukraine. The Prime Minister restated his long-held belief that the issues between Russia and NATO can only be addressed via open and honest communication.
The United Nations Security Council voted on Friday on a draught resolution presented by the United States and Albania, as well as Australia, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania, and the United Kingdom.
However, India abstained on a UN Security Council resolution sponsored by the US that “deplores in the strongest terms” Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine, with New Delhi stating that discussion is the best way to resolve disagreements and conflicts and expressing “regret” that the route of diplomacy was abandoned.
“India is deeply disturbed by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine. We urge that all efforts are made for the immediate cessation of violence and hostilities,” T S Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated in India’s reason of vote in the Council.
