Donald Trump announces 25% tariff on Indian goods from August 1, cites high trade barriers and Russia ties

U.S. President Donald J. Trump on Tuesday announced that India will be subject to a 25% tariff, plus an unspecified penalty, starting August 1, citing longstanding trade grievances and India’s close ties with Russia.

In a strongly worded post on his social media platform on July 30, 2025, Trump stated that while India is considered a friend, the country has historically imposed high tariffs and non-monetary trade barriers, making it difficult for the U.S. to conduct business. He described India’s tariff regime as among the “highest in the world” and called its non-tariff barriers “strenuous and obnoxious.”

Trump also criticized India for its defense and energy trade with Russia, noting that India continues to purchase military equipment and large volumes of energy from Moscow. He linked this to global concerns over the war in Ukraine, calling India’s position “ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”

“INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST,” Trump declared in all caps, emphasizing the punitive measure.

The statement is expected to spark concern in diplomatic and trade circles, especially at a time when U.S.-India ties have been strengthening across sectors including defense, technology, and manufacturing.

There has been no official response yet from the Indian government or the Biden administration.
