Peru declares a curfew in Lima; restricts protest against hike in fuel and fertilizer costs

Pedro Castilla, the Peruvian President, declared a curfew in the capital Lima to ban people from protesting against the hike in fuel prices and fertilizer costs.

The Peruvian government on Tuesday put up a curfew aimed at restricting people from protesting against the hike in fuel prices and fertilizer costs. The protest is spreading across the country. In his statement, the President before addressing the nation through a broadcast said, “The cabinet has agreed to declare a ban on the mobility of citizens from 2 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. of Tuesday, April 5 to protect the fundamental rights of all people.”

The Russia-Ukraine crisis has deepened the problems in Peru as the prices are soaring and hence the protest is catching fire when the Government has claimed of attempting to bring the prices down. Leftist rule of Castilla, which received massive support from rural poor communities is suddenly experiencing a shift in the votes which is dangling at 25 %. He has earlier survived two impeachment attempts, but the present ban on public movement is bound to hamper his chances of running the government. Nearly, four people have been killed in the protest, so far. The protesters have burnt toll booths in the southern city of Ica amidst a fierce clash with Police.
