Iran has confirmed that an exchange of messages with the United States is still ongoing via mediators, just hours before U.S. President Donald Trump’s high-stakes deadline expires.

According to a Reuters report, an Iranian official said that communication through intermediaries continues, but did not provide further details, keeping the outcome uncertain at a time when global tensions are at their peak.

The development comes as the world watches closely ahead of the 5:30 AM IST deadline, which could determine whether the ongoing conflict de-escalates or intensifies further.

War enters critical phase after 38 days of escalation

The current crisis is the result of a rapidly intensifying conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel, which has now stretched beyond five weeks. The war was triggered after diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran collapsed, eventually leading to direct and proxy military actions across the region.

Over the past month, the situation has escalated into missile strikes, air attacks and disruptions to critical infrastructure, with global repercussions. The Strait of Hormuz — a key global oil artery — has remained under threat, causing volatility in energy markets and raising concerns over supply disruptions.

Talks continue, but no clarity yet

Despite the rising tensions, both sides have kept communication channels open through mediators, including regional players such as Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt.

Recent reports suggest that while Iran has rejected temporary ceasefire proposals, it has continued to engage in indirect negotiations, signalling that diplomacy is still in play even as military threats loom.

Three possible outcomes still in play

With the deadline fast approaching, the situation remains fluid with three key possibilities:

  • A deal that could bring temporary or long-term relief after weeks of conflict
  • A deadline extension, which many believe is the most likely scenario given past precedent
  • A sharp escalation, involving U.S.-Israel strikes and Iranian retaliation, which could have severe global consequences

World on edge as deadline nears

The confirmation of ongoing backchannel communication offers a glimmer of hope, but uncertainty continues to dominate the narrative.

With just hours remaining, the world is effectively on standby — awaiting whether diplomacy prevails or the conflict enters a far more dangerous phase.
