According to news agency Reuters, the Chinese military has banned Tesla Cars from entering its housing complex , citing security concerns over the use of Cameras installed on the top of vehicle and inside the vehicle.
The order stated that Tesla cars owner need to park their cars outside military property. It further stated that there is chance of misuse of data and may be used to stole confidential military data. Chinese officials also stated that Tesla car sensors could record visual images of surrounding locations.
Now Tesla CEO Elon Musk has commented on the issue that his company would be shut down if its cars were used to spy.
Tesla cars are popular in China and tesla had recently made a factory in Shanghai. Tesla cars have several small external cameras to assist with parking and self-driving. Its Model 3 and Model Y also have cameras embedded in the rear view mirror for driver safety that are disabled by default. Cameras are embedded for the self drive mode and guide drivers.
The Chinese military’s restrictions on Tesla increased tension as senior Chinese and U.S. officials held a contentious meeting in Alaska, the first such face-to-face interaction since U.S. President Joe Biden took office. But still it is not clear that whether decision was taken to heightened U.S-China tensions.
