Income Tax officers arrived at the BBC’s Delhi headquarters this morning, only days after a major controversy erupted over a documentary series against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claims related to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
According to reports, the taxmen were conducting an investigation into claims of international taxation and transfer pricing issues involving the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation).
According to the sources, some journalists’ phones were confiscated.
According to tax officials, this was a survey, not a search.
“Our officers have gone to check account books, these are not searches,” said Income Tax sources.
The BBC was recently in the headlines for the two-part series “India: The Modi Question,” which was removed from public platforms last month. On January 21, the Center used emergency powers under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, to prohibit various YouTube videos and Twitter messages that contained links to the contentious documentary.
