Have been put under house arrest, claims Mehbooba

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday claimed to have been put under house arrest by the authorities. However, police refuted her claim.

Mehbooba said she was scheduled to visit Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district to attend a party worker wedding ceremony on Wednesday.

Pertinently Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is on a three day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, is scheduled to address a public rally at Baramulla on Wednesday.

“I was informed last night by SP Baramulla Bhatray that I wouldn’t be allowed to travel to Pattan. Today they locked my gates from inside & are now lying through their teeth. Sad that law enforcement agencies are brazenly trying to cover up their tracks,” Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet.

Mehbooba also uploaded a picture of her Fairview house at Gupkar road showing locked gates.

“While HM is going around Kashmir beating drums of normalcy, I am under house arrest for simply wanting to visit Pattan for a worker’s wedding”, the former Chief Minister said in another tweet.

She said “If an ex CM’s fundamental rights can be suspended so easily, one can’t even imagine the plight of a commoner”.

However, Jammu and Kashmir Police responded and said there were no restrictions on her movement.

“It is clarified that there is no restriction of any kind of travel to pattan. Travel to pattan was at 1 pm as intimated to us,” police said.

“The picture tweeted by her( Mehbooba Mufti) is of the inside of the gate with its own lock of residents who stay in the bunglow. There is no lock or any restrictions. She is free to travel,” police tweeted.
