The BJP-ruled UP government, which has been at the receiving end over the Hathras gang-rape incident, on Tuesday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court over the incident. The affidavit stated that the district administration convinced the parents of the deceased to cremate her at night to avoid large scale violence in the morning, citing intelligence inputs of possible assembly of lakhs of protesters. The affidavit was filed saying that the top court must direct CBI investigation into the matter for “free and fair investigation”.

In its affidavit, the UP government also requested the apex court to monitor the CBI investigation into the case, alleging that “vested interests are attempting to ascribe motive to derail a fair probe”.

A “vicious campaign” has been unbridled to defame the state government, the affidavit stated, explaining in details the investigation that has been carried out so far into the matter. The UP government also alleged that the issue is being given caste and communal colour.

The affidavit was filed on Tuesday after allegedly the victim’s family requested on a probe by the apex court into the matter and refused a CBI probe. They wanted a ‘fair trial’ of the matter by the Supreme Court.
