Kuldeep Bishnoi, a Haryana MLA has joined BJP in the presence of CM ML Khattar today. During the Rajya Sabha elections, Bishnoi who was a Congress leader expelled from all party positions for cross-voting in the June elections. He resigned from the assembly on Wednesday, a day before joining the ruling BJP.

The 53-year-old Mr Bishnoi submitted his resignation to Speaker Gian Chand Gupta. This necessitates a byelection for Mr Bishnoi’s current seat in Hisar district, Adampur.

“I am joining the BJP as an ordinary worker,” said Mr Bishnoi, who also formally resigned from the Congress “taking into account my own feelings and those of my supporters.”

Mr Bishnoi immediately challenged Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda to run from Adampur after resigning. He was expelled from all party positions by Congress shortly after voting in the Rajya Sabha elections in June.

The four-time MLA and two-time MP had been sulking since before that, raising a revolting banner after the party passed over him for the position of Haryana unit chief during a revamp earlier this year.

It will be the second time in nearly six years that the younger son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal has left the Congress.

“I feel the Congress is no longer what it used to be during Indira Ji and Rajiv Gandhi Ji’s time. Congress has deviated from its ideology. It has been reduced to a party of ‘chatukars’ (sycophants). Many of those who are running the party are those who either have not fought election or haven’t won for decades,” Mr Bishnoi said.
