Former Punjab Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini was booked on May 6 in a 29-year-old case of abduction, torture and disappearance of junior engineer Balwant Singh Multani 1991. On September 8, his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On September 12, the arrest warrant against him was issued by the court of Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Ravtesh Inderjit Singh.
Today, he appeared before Mohali court, seeking the withdrawal of the arrest warrant against him. The court has issued a notice to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police to reply. The next date of hearing is set to be on September 30.
In the application, Saini said that the Supreme Court has granted him interim protection from arrest in the case and the non-bailable warrant issued against him be withdrawn and that said he is ready to join the investigation in the case.
Sumedh Singh Saini is a 1982 batch India Police Service (IPS) officer who retired as Director General of Police as well as chairman of Punjab Police Housing Corporation on June 30, 2018.
