The Election Commission (EC) has served a show cause notice to Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This action comes in the wake of alleged derogatory comments made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the party’s social media platform.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a complaint with the EC, citing an ‘unethical’ and ‘highly objectionable’ video clip and comments on a social media platform that targeted the Prime Minister. The EC has requested a response from AAP regarding the alleged violation of the model code by November 16.
Kejriwal has previously received show cause notices from the EC. He was asked to clarify his position for allegedly blaming the BJP for inciting communal violence in Delhi and for attacks on churches in the city.
The EC has determined that Kejriwal is in prima-facie violation of the model code of conduct. The code stipulates that “no party or candidate shall engage in any activity that may exacerbate existing differences or create mutual hatred or tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic”.
